Brian
Thomas - (Trombone)
Boston based trombonist Brian Thomas is widely regarded
as one of the leading funk/jazz artist in the northeast.
His melodic, lyrical, and funky style first gained him
recognition in the funk/jazz scene in the late 1990's.
Since then, Brian has continued to develop and create his
own voice and grow as a musician.
Brian began playing trombone at age 10 in his hometown
of Rochester, NY. Brian realized his passion to perform
and decided to continue his musical studies at Ithaca College.
Brian studied classical trombone with Dr. Harold Reynolds
and jazz with Steve Brown. Along with earning a degree
in music education, he gained valuable gig experience as
a leader and sideman. As co-founder of Ithaca based funk
band Nozmo King, Thomas and NK produced 2 CD's and toured
from Seattle, Washington to Key West, Florida. After a
brief stint with Boston/Ithaca based roots reggae band
John Brown's Body, Brian settled in bean town.
Brian started showing up to all the Boston jam sessions
and soon landed a weekly gig at the legendary Wally's Jazz
Café', where he continued to work on his craft.
While hosting the jam session, Brian performed with Roy
Hargrove, Sam Kininger, Eric Krasno, Mark Kelly, Charles
Haynes, Andre Heyward, John Blackwell, and many of the
most killin' cats in Boston.
Brian quickly searched more musicians to play with and
learn from, and eventually started his own band. The Brian
Thomas Group began performing original jazz and funk at
clubs in the Boston area. The BTG now provides Brian and
its members the chance to compose and explore new ideas
and perform regularly in Boston, Providence, and Northampton.
Thomas is also currently working the Hammond organ driven
funk group, Akashic Record. Based out of Boston, Akashic
Record brings funk and soul jazz to venues throughout New
England and New York. Brian also free-lance records at
many local studios and performs regularly with Pressure
Cooker, Kings Highway, Adonai & I, and The Players
Inc.
Brian has also performed with Melvin Sparks, Jon Ellis,
Andre Ward, Spearhead, The Slip, The Jerry Garcia Band,
Andre Ward, Peter Prince, Chuck Mangione, Jiggs Whigham,
Paul Smoker, Steve Brown, Rich Thompson, Steve Gadd, Lou
Soloff, Don Menza, Carl Fontana, The Gap Mangione Big Band,
Melvin Henderson & Paradigm Shift, Alex Meixner, and
Addison Groove Project.
